BELLFLOWER — The kick is no good.
With just five seconds left, down by one point and no timeouts left, a series of frustrating penalties against Bellflower football helped set up Colton with what could have been a game-winning 29-yard field goal.
Yellowjackets kicker Elijah Santiago watched in disbelief as his kick sailed well short of the uprights, leading to Bellflower’s 13-12 win in the CIF Southern Section Division 12 quarterfinals.
“That last drive, man, it was penalty after penalty, a targeting call that I don’t even know,” Bellflower head coach Keith Miller said. “But you know what, true to the character of our team, we just keep overcoming adversity.”
The rainy conditions set up a muddy encounter for both teams at Ron Yary Stadium.
