Kamal Haasan has addressed the recent exit of director Sundar C from the much-anticipated film Thalaivar 173, which stars Rajinikanth. The film, produced by Kamal's Raaj Kamal Films International, was announced earlier this month and is set for release around Pongal 2027. Just days after the announcement, Sundar C stepped down, citing "unforeseen and unavoidable circumstances" in a press release.
Speaking to reporters, Kamal Haasan stated, "Sundar C has explained the reason for his withdrawal from the project through a press release. I don’t have anything to add to it." He emphasized the importance of finding a script that satisfies Rajinikanth, saying, "Until my star is satisfied with the script, we will keep scouting for it. We are currently in the process of finalising a quality script." Kamal also hinted at the possibility of a younger director taking the helm for the project, adding, "Expect the unexpected."
Sundar C expressed regret over his decision to leave the film, describing it as a "difficult decision." He reflected on his long-standing association with both Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan, stating, "In life, there are moments when we must follow the path laid out for us, even if it diverges from our dreams. I will always hold them in the highest regard."
The collaboration between Kamal Haasan and Rajinikanth marks a significant moment in Tamil cinema, as it has been 46 years since they last worked together. While no new director has been announced yet, both actors are committed to ensuring the project moves forward with a compelling story.
