November is often a month that can give us an indication of what the bird population and diversity will be here in Western New York State this winter.
Overall, New York State is a great state to see a very large numbers of bird species as it stretches from the Great Lakes all the way down to Long Island. Here in our western portion of the state are plenty of open bodies of water such as Lake Ontario and Lake Erie, the Finger Lakes, and two National Wildlife Refuges in Genesee/Orleans counties — and Montezuma a little more to the east. Several lakes will not freeze over which will allow us to see a variety of waterfowl all winter and well into the spring.
