PARKERSBURG -- Winfield's football team has made the WVSSAC state playoffs three times in its four years under coach Eddie Smolder.
However, the Generals failed to reach the postseason last year. Now, there's a redemption arc brewing in Putnam County, with Winfield hoping to make some noise.
The Generals enter the postseason riding a 7-3 record. They are tabbed as the No. 10 seed and will travel to Herbert Hoover to take on the No. 7 Huskies on Saturday.
"Our kids have improved a lot this season, and this year's success has came down to our kids' heart, guts and will," Smolder said at the pre-playoff meeting at WVSSAC headquarters on Sunday. "They're a great group of kids that love Winfield, our program and our school. They have a close bond with each other.
