Ukraine’s top anti-corruption agencies revealed this week that a high-powered clique, led by a close friend of President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, was caught embezzling US$100 million from the country’s energy sector. The investigators further suggested that this scheme compromised the wartime security of the national electrical grid and indirectly allowed Russia to plunge much of the country into prolonged blackouts this autumn.  

This is undoubtedly the largest corruption scandal Zelenskyy has ever faced. Not only did his allies orchestrate the plunder of strategically vital funds, it appears that the Ukrainian president himself may have tried to protect them from investigation and prosecution.
