Shuniah's humble rink shack is having a makeover as well as a new name.
Following a $700,000 upgrade, the newly named Pavilion Hub is to include accessible washrooms, expanded change-room areas, a new concession, equipment storage and an "integrated" water supply for the outdoor rink at the MacGregor Recreation Centre.
Construction is currently underway.
Shuniah Mayor Wendy Landry said the upgrade "will strengthen both the physical and social fabric of our community."
On Monday, the province announced $175,000 towards the project. Hydro One earlier kicked in $250,000.
Also on Monday, the municipality learned Ontario Provincial Police is to receive about $66,000 for a front-line officer to focus on "Shuniah's local priorities."
Shuniah is policed under a contract with Thunder Bay OPP,
