WASHINGTON — Someone in Georgia just became a multimillionaire overnight, but their identity may never be revealed.
A single ticket sold in the state matched all six numbers in Friday’s Mega Millions drawing, winning the estimated $980 million jackpot, or $452.2 million in cash. It’s the largest-ever single Mega Millions payout in Georgia’s history, and the eighth-largest jackpot ever awarded in the game, according to Mega Millions.
The jackpot had been rolling since June 27, growing through 40 consecutive drawings and becoming the longest stretch in Mega Millions history.
During that run, players nationwide won nearly 14.3 million prizes totaling more than $343 million in non-jackpot winnings, including 21 second-tier prizes of $2 million or more.
