Attuned to what his audience wants, he not only recites his timelessly gnomic line about seagulls and sardines, but sings it. “When the seagulls follow the trawler / It’s because they think sardines will be thrown into the sea,” he croons, as tunefully as Johnny Hallyday, with whom he once shared a duet. “And the press called me the greatest philosopher / I think they were completely right.”
