Albuquerque native James Borrego has landed a new head coaching gig in the NBA. On Saturday, Borrego was named interim head coach of the New Orleans Pelicans, replacing Willie Green.
Borrego is no stranger to NBA circles. He was the head coach of the Charlotte Hornets from 2018 to 2022. Borrego was also an interim head coach for the Orlando Magic during the 2014-15 season. He has a career head coaching record of 148-183.
Borrego takes over a Pelicans squad that has been plagued with injuries over the past two seasons, but boasts a promising core group of Trey Murphy, Derrick Queen and Jeremiah Fears. One of his first moves might involve former overall number one pick Zion Williamson, who is out with a hamstring injury and is rumored to be on the trading block.
