CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The college application process has evolved significantly in recent years, impacting how institutions reach and recruit prospective students.

Enrollment officials in West Virginia report that the admissions cycle has become longer, said John Waltz, vice president for enrollment and marketing at West Virginia Wesleyan College.

“The cycle has changed a lot,” he said. “It lasts longer and it starts a little earlier. We see the bulk of our applications come in the fall and going through January and February. It usually starts to die off a bit around March.”

Some colleges receive most of their application from July through December, but applications may continue to arrive into August, said Jerry Ross, vice president for enrollment management at Marshall University.
