The late physicist Professor Peter Higgs has donated his Nobel Prize medal to Edinburgh University , where he proposed an idea which changed scientists' understanding of the universe.

In 1964, Prof Higgs was a researcher at the university when he predicted the existence of a sub-atomic particle- dubbed the "God particle" - which is now seen as vital to the universe's creation.

Officially known as the Higgs boson, it would not be confirmed for another 48 years, with his theory finally proved by experiments at the Large Hadron Collider at Cern, the European Organisation for Nuclear Research, in 2012.

He was jointly awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics in 2013 with Francois Englert.
