Nine people have been injured, including one critically, when a speedway car crashed into a crowd in regional NSW .

A car competing in a race crashed through a fence and hit a mobile grandstand at the Walcha showground on Derby St, Walcha about 6.15pm on Saturday.

Bystanders rushed into help those injured before paramedics took seven men and two women – aged between 20 and 75 – to Walcha District Hospital.

A 54-year-old man suffered critical injuries while another three people were seriously injured.

All four were taken to major hospitals overnight.

Police say the 27-year-old speedway car driver was involved in an on-track collision right before the incident.

Investigations are ongoing.
