MANCHESTER, Pa. — Nearly a half-hour after making history, the South Fayette girls soccer team was still admiring its gold medals and championship trophy.
Players wanted to take a few more pictures and soak it all in a few moments longer on Saturday afternoon at Northeastern’s Bobcat Stadium before trudging down the hill and boarding the bus home. It was gloomy and chilly outside, but no one cared.
In its first PIAA Class 3A championship appearance, South Fayette (22-2-1) used a three-goal second half to power past District 1 champion Radnor 3-1 on Saturday afternoon and win the program’s first state championship.
“This team keeps making history,” junior Penn State recruit Abbey Spalla said. “We knew we wanted to finish it off with a gold medal.”
