In the latest chapter of the Tina Peters saga, federal officials have requested that the former Mesa County clerk be transferred to federal custody, which would give the Trump administration a way to free her from custody. The decision will ultimately be the state's to make.

This comes after an effort over the past several months by the Trump administration to set Peters free from her nine-year prison sentence.

Officials with the Federal Bureau of Prisons sent a letter about Peters to Colorado’s Department of Corrections on Wednesday, the state confirmed Friday.

It remains unclear why the Federal Bureau of Prisons is seeking to transfer Peters to its custody.

The letter was obtained by The Denver Post from a records request after a corrections spokeswoman declined to release the letter
