Dave Burgess, the musician, songwriter and producer who co-wrote the instrumental rock-and-roll hit “Tequila” and founded the band The Champs, has died at 90 years old.
Burgess died on Oct. 19 in Dover, Tennessee where he lived, according to the late musician’s obituary . No cause of death has been revealed.
Burgess was born on Dec. 3, 1934 in Los Angeles, California, as Sigmund Eck. He was raised by his mother and stepfather, Austin “Tex” Burges, and adopted his stepfather’s name as his stage name, adding an extra “s.” He legally changed his name to Dave Burgess in 1959.
The Champs was created after Burgess was brought into Gene Autrey’s Challenge Records as a solo artist to assemble a recording session in hopes of creating a hit for the label, according to Daily Mail .
