RICHMOND, Va. (WWBT) - Most hemp products could soon become federally illegal after Congress passed a government funding bill Wednesday night.
The legislation contained a surprise provision that would cap THC limits at 0.4 milligrams, effectively eliminating any psychoactive effect.
The move is now threatening Virginia businesses and an industry worth hundreds of millions of dollars.
Point 5 bottle shop in Carytown has been selling THC and CBD drinks derived from hemp since 2022.
“You have people taking them to help with sleep, to help with inflammation, to help just relax a little bit,” said Jody Sidle, founder and owner of Point 5.
Sidle says many customers use the drinks for anxiety or as an alternative to alcohol.
