EAST LANSING – It was already a bad week for Jonathan Smith and the Spartans before suffering a seventh straight loss.

Prior to falling to 3-7 overall and 0-7 in Big Ten play with a home defeat against Penn State on Saturday, Michigan State on Wednesday announced it reached a negotiated resolution with the NCAA regarding recruiting violations that occurred under former coach Mel Tucker .

As a result, the Spartans were placed on three years of probation, fined and hit with recruiting restrictions while also being forced to vacate 14 combined wins from 2022-24 for using a trio of ineligible players. Five of those victories came under Smith last season in his first year with the program.
