BEAUMONT, Texas — A Beaumont man is recovering in Galveston tonight after suffering severe burns while re-tarring the roof of his home, according to Beaumont Fire officials.

The accident happened shortly after 2 p.m. at a home in the 4400 block of Folsom Drive. Crews at the scene told 12News the man fell into hot tar while working on the roof.

Deputy Fire Chief Scott Wheat said the man suffered burns to his hands, feet, back and buttocks. Wheat estimated that 30 to 40 percent of the man’s body was burned.

A medical helicopter landed in the back parking lot of Calvary Baptist Church to transport the man to a hospital in Galveston.

Wheat said the man was in stable condition as of Saturday evening.
