PHOENIX — A West Valley family is pushing for better lighting and signage along rural roads after 19-year-old Anthony Alvarez died in a motorcycle crash on a dark stretch of Olive Avenue.

A memorial of pictures and candles now lines the roadside where Alvarez, a rising BMX racer known as “A-Train,” crashed his motorcycle last Sunday night near Olive Avenue and Cotton Lane. His family says he had already made a name for himself in the racing world.

“He dominated the racing world and on the track, there was no stopping him,” said his aunt, Sonia Arellano.

Alvarez, who raced BMX across the country, was known for his speed, determination and frequent first-place finishes. Off the track, relatives say he was a vibrant, joyful presence.
