French Quarter voters renewed a neighborhood sales tax that funds public safety efforts in the neighborhood by a wide margin on Saturday.
87% of neighborhood voters had signed off on the renewal just after 9:30 p.m. Saturday, with 7 out of 8 precincts, along with early and absentee votes, reporting.
The 0.245% tax, dubbed the "Quarter for the Quarter," was last approved by voters in 2021 and is levied on sales of goods in the French Quarter. The money is designated to provide public safety services and to help homeless residents who often gather there, with an eye toward spurring more economic development in the city's oldest neighborhood.
