We love to have order and purpose in our lives. We are soothed by birdsong and the whispering of breezes in the trees. “This is My Father’s World” was once a favorite hymn in Christian churches.
But I have heard people disavow that concept in view of the chaos of pain and suffering in our world. How could God let all of these people suffer? Can corrupt governments and terrifying hurricanes be consistent with a loving God? Except, perhaps, for earthquakes and flash floods, most of mankind’s suffering is due to mankind’s actions.
