The Colorado River Indian Tribes Tribal Council has granted personhood status to the Colorado River under Tribal Law.

The resolution, approved Nov. 6, makes CRIT the first community to recognize personhood for the Colorado River. The move gives the river legal rights under tribal law and directs future tribal leadership to prioritize the river’s physical, spiritual, and cultural well-being in decision-making. ×
