A teenager accused of vandalising Mount Gambier’s controversial $136,000 “Blue Blob” statue in South Australia’s South East has faced court — and is now asking the public to help cover her legal costs.
Amelia Vanderhorst, 19, was charged with one count of damaging property after allegedly gluing oversized googly eyes onto the Cast in Blue sculpture on September 13.
Police allege Vanderhorst was “recklessly indifferent” to whether her actions could damage the artwork, which was installed in July and has divided the community since its unveiling.
The council reported the incident to police, with repair costs estimated at less than $2,500.
Court documents later revealed the damage bill was $1800, caused when the eyes were torn off, leaving glue residue and chipped paint.
