Mozambique’s Santa Carolina island, made famous in the global reality show Survivor, is set for a $102-million upgrade by a South African luxury safari travel company.
Singita will invest $60 million to build a 60-bed lodge on what’s also known as Paradise Island, Mozambique’s tourism agency told Bloomberg. The company will spend another $42 million on projects around the Bazaruto Archipelago, where the island is situated.
The project promises to breathe new life into the island that’s home to an abandoned hotel that Elton John and Bob Dylan have stayed, according to local legend. It will also give a much-needed boost to Mozambique’s tourism industry still battling to bounce back after months of deadly unrest in the wake of last year’s contested election.
