Marquan Carter ran for 102 yards and two touchdowns on 17 carries as top-seeded DePaul, No. 11 in the NJ.com Top 20, defeated eighth-seeded St. John Vianney 35-14 in the first round of the NJSIAA/Xfinity Non-Public B tournament in Wayne.
Carter snapped a 7-7 tie and put DePaul (6-4) ahead for good with a 5-yard rushing TD with 28 seconds left in the first half.
DePaul, the defending Non-Public B champs, didn’t put the game away until the fourth quarter as Carter ran for a 1-yard TD just 89 seconds into the period that made it 28-14. Fourteen seconds later, Logan Monteyne returned an interception 37 yards for a score that made it a three-possession game.
AJ Larkin opened the scoring for DePaul with a 16-yard touchdown run in the first quarter.
