The westbound lanes of Interstate 10 in New Orleans East closed for more than hour Sunday morning after a pedestrian was struck and killed on the highway, according to the New Orleans Police Department.

Authorities have not released the name of the victim, a 40-year-old woman.

The crash was reported just before 5:50 a.m. on I-10 west near the intersection with Interstate 510, the NOPD said.

It's not clear why the woman, who was hit by a Nissan SUV, was on foot on the highway. The woman died of her injuries.

The vehicle's driver remained at the scene of the crash. Police closed the highway and launched a drone to help with the investigation. The interstate reopened about 7:15 a.m.

Anyone with information about the crash is asked to call the NOPD's Traffic Fatality Unit at 504-658-6205.
