Pittsburgh Steelers outside linebacker Nick Herbig was fined for a hip drop tackle against Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert.
The play came on a sack when Herbig landed on one of Hebert’s ankles, and he came up gingerly after the play. Officially, he was fined $6.656 for the tackle, his first fine of the season.
The NFL has added an emphasis on eliminating hip drop tackles from the game, even making it a penalty. However, it is a hard judgment call to make in real time, and so it is rarely called, but they are often fined after the game.
That play has created a number of knee and ankle injuries over the years for players, and is outright banned now. It is heavily scrutinized now. Herbert said after the game he was okay.
