Never heard of Foris Vineyards founders Ted Gerber and his late wife, Meri? That is unfortunate, as they are an important part of Oregon’s early modern wine history. Never tried their Foris wines? Doubly unfortunate, as I can’t think of too many other Oregon wineries that deliver this level of wine quality for prices that encourage you to put a case together.

The downside to owning a winery in Cave Junction in southern Oregon ’s Illinois Valley is that Foris isn’t exactly on the wine tourism super highway. Their location, a mere seven miles from the Oregon-California border, is a 4.5-hour drive from Portland.

Which means you have to want to go to Foris Vineyards, which is precisely what I did a few days ago. The people and the wines were well worth the drive.
