A man escaped with a minor injury when a bullet penetrated a ceiling and struck him in the lower body as he lay in bed at home in Long Beach, authorities said Sunday.

Officers were dispatched at about 8:50 p.m. Saturday to a “shots” call in the 3600 block of Thornlake Avenue, one block east of Norwalk Boulevard in the northeast part of the city, the Long Beach Police Department reported.

“Preliminary investigation revealed the victim was lying in bed when a bullet penetrated the ceiling and struck him, causing minimal injury,” according to a police statement. “The motive and circumstances of the incident remain under investigation.”

No further information was immediately available.
