The City of Burnaby issued a formal apology this weekend for “historic discrimination against people of Chinese descent, acknowledging decades of systemic exclusion and harm between 1892 and 1947.”

Mayor Mike Hurley and councillors attended a ceremony recognizing the city’s racist treatment of Chinese residents at the Crystal Ballroom in the Hilton Vancouver Metrotown.

A statement said the hotel and Crystal Mall were chosen for their historic significance, having been developed on land that was home to the Dragon Inn, an “iconic” restaurant that helped introduce Chinese food and culture to many in Burnaby.
