A Maryland man was killed on a Carroll County highway — and police say his son assaulted a passenger inside the striking vehicle moments after the impact.
Maryland State Police troopers were called shortly before 9:45 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 14, to westbound Baltimore Boulevard (MD-140) near Gorsuch Road for a crash involving a pedestrian, officials said.
Troopers said David Comer, 53, of Westminster, was running from the median with another pedestrian when he “entered the travel portion of the roadway” and was struck by a 2014 Kia Optima.
Comer died at the scene, according to Maryland State Police.
The driver, Bridget Dautermann, 18, was not hurt and remained on scene, police said. Her passenger, Edgar Herrera, 18, was also uninjured in the crash — but not afterward.
Police said the second pedestrian, identified as Zachary Comer, 24, “assaulted the front seat passenger of the vehicle identified as Herrera” following the collision.
Troopers said both men were transported to area hospitals.
Police said charges against Zachary Comer for the alleged assault are pending the outcome of the investigation. Police said they believe Zachary and David Comer are father and son.
All westbound lanes of Baltimore Boulevard were closed for about three hours, police said. Westminster Police, Carroll County Sheriff’s deputies, and MDOT SHA assisted at the scene.
The Maryland State Police Crash Team is leading the ongoing investigation.
