Mike Kafka has been waiting his whole life to lead an NFL team.

He never got a chance to do it as a quarterback. Despite being on seven teams over a six-year career as a backup, he appeared in just four games, attempted just 16 passes and never came close to making a start.

Coaching would turn out to be his path. And after eight years climbing the ranks as an assistant, he finally got his shot on Sunday as interim head coach of the Giants.

Even then, however, he said he never took a moment to look around and soak in the atmosphere of his debut. He was too busy thinking about the game plan and the weather and the other zillion things that the guy in charge has to have inside his head.
