Pediatrician Hema Patel, who works at the Montreal Children’s Hospital and has more than 30 years of experience, says she has already received job offers from British Columbia and Alberta in the weeks since Quebec passed its controversial health-care reform.

On Sunday, Patel was among dozens of pediatricians and family doctors protesting Bill 2 outside the Montreal Children’s Hospital, as part of co-ordinated demonstrations at children’s hospitals across the province. The doctors warned the reform could trigger a mass exodus of qualified pediatricians like Patel from Quebec, which would leave thousands of children without a family doctor, worsen overcrowding in already strained emergency rooms, and make it nearly impossible for children to receive proper health care .
