A man who set a Melbourne synagogue on fire, causing $54,000 worth of damage, will be freed from jail after spending 134 days in solitary confinement.

Angelo Loras, a homeless 35-year-old, was arrested by counter-terrorism police following the incident at the East Melbourne Hebrew Congregation synagogue on July 4.

Up to 20 people were inside the building for Shabbat, according to court documents.

Loras was arrested the following night and told police he did not know the building was a synagogue, instead believing it was a residential property.

The fire came on the same night as two unrelated incidents — a protest at the Israeli-owned restaurant Miznon and the torching of three cars in Greensborough.
