A report has suggested abandoning road access to one of the region's most iconic tourist destinations, while creating a "spectacular" new experience.
The Jenolan Caves, south of Oberon, have been shut since April 2024 after an extreme weather event made the precinct inaccessible.
It's unlikely the caves will be back open to the public until mid-2026 at the earliest, with the Two Mile section of Jenolan Caves Road currently undergoing extensive repairs , while the Five Mile Road is unlikely to reopen.
The latest report, commissioned by the Jenolan Caves Reserve Trust and carried out by Riser + Gain, recommended that a mono detachable gondola is the most financially viable and environmentally sustainable way to get visitors into the caves.
