The Muhammad Yunus government's pathetic record of securing minority lives and rights was criticised by the Pope as he named Bangladesh among four countries for the persecution of Christians. Hundreds of Hindus, Buddhists and Christians have faced attacks with their places of worship being on the target of Islamists, who have gained power after the government of PM Sheikh Hasina was toppled in August 2024.
"In various parts of the world, Christians suffer discrimination and persecution. I think especially of Bangladesh, Nigeria, Mozambique, Sudan, and other countries from which we frequently hear of attacks on communities and places of worship," said Pope Leo XIV.
