Manipur’s ace weightlifter, Mirabai Chanu has announced that she will compete in a higher weight category for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, following a restructuring of women’s weightlifting divisions.
Chanu, who has long competed in the 48–49kg category, revealed that the lowest women’s weight class at LA 2028 will now be 53kg, effectively eliminating her current category from Olympic competition. The International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) has confirmed 12 new divisions for the upcoming Games, with six each for men and women, an increase from five per gender at Paris 2024.
