HURRICANE — A new Civil War Trails marker was unveiled Friday in Hurricane at the site of an 1863 battle.
Installed at ShotFire Fitness , located at 1165 Midland Trail across the road from Hurricane Bridge Park , the marker tells the story of the Battle of Hurricane Bridge.
On March 28, 1863, Confederate troops under General Albert G. Jenkins attacked the Union garrison at the village of Hurricane Bridge, which was under the command of Captain James William Johnson of the 13th West Virginia Infantry, resulting in a five-hour long struggle.
There were about 600 Confederate soldiers and nearly 300 Union men in the battle, according to regimental records at the state archives. Four Union and two Confederates were killed.
