LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — Arkansas Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders has proclaimed a new election timeline to fill the Senate District 26 seat following a court order in October that she maintains is "unlawful."

The District 26 Senate seat was left empty after the passing of Gary Stubblefield on Sept. 2. Sanders made the vacancy official and set an election date in November 2026, over a year after his death.

Following backlash, the governor reset the date for June 2026, still beyond the legally required 150 days.

Colt Shelby, a resident of the district, took the governor to court and a Pulaski County judge ruled in his favor .

Court documents said election commissioners from the district testified that, while it would be difficult, holding the election by March 2026 would be possible.
