The Insurance Awareness Committee (IAC-Life) has said the recently launched Bima Gram API can help improve the accuracy of rural insurance reporting and strengthen monitoring of coverage across Gram Panchayats.
The Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) introduced the API as part of its efforts to support insurers in meeting Rural and Social (RuSo) obligations. Under these mandates, insurers are required to cover a minimum share of lives, dwellings, shops and vehicles in designated rural and social sector locations.
Insurers have faced difficulties in verifying whether a policy originates from a rural area because many identity documents do not specify the Gram Panchayat (GP). This gap has often led to manual checks and inconsistent mapping of coverage data.
