There was something about Joey O’Neal that compelled Hatteras Island photographer Michael Halminski to snap his picture back in1979. O’Neal worked at the Rodanthe Fish House where he stood shirtless that day with a can of beer in hand. It was a place where Halminski liked to hang out.

Joey helped with packing and preparing fish for shipment. Sometimes Halminski pitched in, and it was not unusual to go home with a mess of free fish. “I considered the Rodanthe Fish House a piece of local culture,” says Halminski.’” Today much of that culture has vanished.”
