The Supreme Court on Monday heard a petition seeking control over sudden fluctuations in airfare and extra taxes in the country. In the public interest litigation (PIL) filed by social activist S Lakshminarayanan, the Court issued notices to the Central Government, DGCA, and the Airport Economic Regulatory Authority (AERA), seeking responses within four weeks.
The petition claims that domestic air travel in India is becoming extremely expensive and unregulated. Private airlines increase fares without any clear reason and add various hidden taxes, which increase the financial burden on passengers.
