The longest federal government shutdown in U.S. history has ended after a 43-day stretch that put food assistance and health care funding in the political crosshairs.

President Donald Trump late Wednesday night signed legislation to reopen the government and restore current funding levels through Jan. 30, potentially teeing up another showdown in the new year between lawmakers over a spending package. The bill signed by Trump passed Congress after eight Senate Democrats broke with their party and signed onto the deal.
