MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) - On this day, Nov. 17, 1940, the Green Bay Packers became the first NFL team to travel by plane to and from a game.

During the 1940 season, the Packers had five away games in a row, leading head coach Earl “Curly” Lambeau to decide to fly to one of the games instead of taking a train or bus.

They technically left Green Bay on Nov. 14, traveling first by train to Chicago, and then boarded two United Airlines planes to New York. They split the team in half to travel.

When the planes stopped in Cleveland to refuel, it was so foggy out that the team and airline decided it was safer not to fly the rest of the way home.
