With the U.S. Mint having punched out its last pennies ever on Wednesday, Nov. 12, New Jersey businesses are transitioning by switching away from exact change.

Instead, they’ll round to the nearest nickel, so a $1.99 item would likely instead be $2.00.

It’s bound to cause some headaches, said Jason Lee, manager at one such business, Manhattan Bagel in Elmwood Park.

“There’s definitely going to be some backlash,” Lee said on the phone on Friday, Nov. 14. “People would wait for their pennies — stand in line and wait.”
