( NewsNation ) — Haiti is on the verge of qualifying for its first World Cup since 1974, despite its coach never having set foot in the country.

Armed gangs control a large part of Haiti’s capital, Port-au-Prince. The conflict has forced approximately 1.3 million people from their homes and caused a significant hunger problem in the country, as reported by Reuters .

Travelers are advised against visiting the country due to the threat of kidnappings, terrorist activity and civil unrest, which has prevented Haiti’s 52-year-old French coach, Sébastien Migne, from going there.
