The Arp Police Department is seeking to join a federal program that would allow local police officers to enforce limited immigration authority.

The police department is considering the 287(g) program's Task Force Model. This type of the program allows local law enforcement to enforce limited immigration authority with ICE oversight as the local officers enforce their regular duties.

Arp Police Chief Joe Keegan said his department is in the "beginning phases" of establishing the program, but the Arp City Council would need to give their approval first. The issue has not yet been placed on a city council agenda.
