ELKHART, Ind. (WNDU) - A connecting route in the city of Elkhart is now completed!

Construction has finally wrapped up on the Benham Avenue underpass.

Benham Avenue is now redirected entirely to Third Street in the heart of Elkhart!

The new underpass runs under the Norfolk Southern tracks.

Not only connecting different city streets, but it’s a walkable connection.

City leaders told us one of the driving forces behind this multi-million-dollar project was flood mitigation too.

“The driving reason behind this project was actually a new storm water lift station, not a lift station that we have around the rest of the city that moves our sanitary sewer but actually moves storm water. So, this project has a large lift station with three pumps,” said Jeffrey Schaffer an engineer for the cit
