CARBONDALE, Ill. (WSIL) -- A crash on Monday morning led to the death of a pedestrian in rural Carbondale.

The Jackson County Sheriff's Office reported Nancy Heil-Schaffner was struck by a vehicle while attempting to cross N. Reed Station Road near Haney Road, just before 8 a.m. on November 17.

The sheriff's office said a man was driving a black 2021 Hyundai northbound when the crash occurred.

A Carbondale Police Detective, who reportedly witnessed the incident, provided immediate assistance until the ambulance arrived.

Heil-Schaffner was transported to an area hospital where she later passed away.

The Jackson County Sheriff's Traffic Crash Reconstruction Unit is investigating the cause and circumstances of the crash.
