Former Penn State football coach James Franklin, who was fired last month after a 3-3 start, is being hired as Virginia Tech’s coach, according to multiple outlets Monday.

The 53-year-old Franklin will succeed Brent Pry, his longtime defensive coordinator who was fired by the Hokies in September with a 16-24 record, which included an 0-3 start in his fourth season.

Penn State director of athletics Pat Kraft fired Franklin on Oct. 12, the day after the Nittany Lions lost 22-21 to Northwestern at Beaver Stadium, their third consecutive defeat. He had a buyout estimated at $48 million that could be offset by his salary at a new job.

During an interview with ESPN six days after Kraft dismissed him, Franklin made it clear that he planned to continue coaching somewhere.
